MiteCheck Survey

About

Welcome Honey Bee Friend! This survey is a national effort to collect mite infestation data and to visualize varroa infestations in honey bee colonies.

For more information about the Mite-A-Thon program, please see this informative flyer .

Data Collection

From 2016 - August 2023, participants entered data using the MiteCheck mobile app and web API. This activity resulted in the collection of nearly 10,000 responses from dedicated citizen scientists all over the country! In 2023, BIP discontinued the MiteCheck mobile app, but we now provide a new mite sampling and record keeping application freely available at this link. Results from this new app are included in the map below.

Participants monitor the level of mites (number of mites per 100 bees) using a standardized protocol utilizing two common methods of assessment (powdered sugar roll or alcohol wash) and then enter data, including location, total number of hives, number of hives tested, local habitat, and the number of varroa mites counted from each hive. The published information does not identify individual participants.
